Accountant – Revenue Recognition

Hours: 37.5 Monday to Friday 
Location: Hybrid remote working, with 3 days a week in our VHQ
Contract: 12 Month Secondment / FTC

In this role you'll assist in establishing, operating, and controlling the RPA & TBox accounting flows into the General Ledger (G/L) and to ensure effective business & regulatory reporting in conjunction with the Manager – Financial Accounting. You will support in delivering accurate, reliable, and timely books of account for Virgin Atlantic (VAA) and Virgin Atlantic Holidays (VAH) in line with business requirements and recognised in accordance with IFRS.

You will be responsible for generating accurate reports on VAA & VAH revenues & costs. You'll play a key role coordinating and leading all aspects of the interfaces between reservation & accounting systems - RPA/Tbox and Oracle. Contributing towards improving and de-risking the monthly close process while ensuring GL postings are accurate & complete, This will include ensuring all documentation and controls are adequately maintained and explaining balances and processes to internal and external auditors. 

Acting independently where required, you will be a key point of contact between teams including Business Partners, Revenue Accounts, the Holidays Business and the Financial Accounting team. Although the RPA & Tbox systems are managed by others you will be required to understand and challenge the data that is produced and continually look to improve data flows to drive more accurate, efficient, and robust processes (including testing of improvements in these processes). Including contributing and/or leading data analysis and regular business reporting as required, and developing a comprehensive view of the accounting process for both VAA and VAH.
  • Assist team members with close of month end and RPA and TBOX interfaces into G/L. Aiding the overall team manager in review of VAH and VAA month end positions to ensure accuracy & completeness.
  • Work with team to ensure timely, accurate and complete WD3 airline and holidays revenues and costs in the GL.
  • Complete, maintain and review accounting reconciliations as required.
  • Find opportunities to improve processes and controls and lead initiatives to deliver these.
  • Investigate time critical issues, recommend next steps and/or solutions to manager in line with IFRS/controls requirements (includes temporary solutions to deliver month end on time with long term solution follow up).
  • Liaise with Loyalty Accounting team where vital to ensure correct classification
  • Ensure that the balance sheet reconciliations are of the highest quality, fully understood and provide meaningful analysis of movements in accounts.
  • Challenge excess provisions where necessary and ensure minimal ad-hoc releases due to errors.
  • Perform occasional audits of chosen recommendations, examining their format, documentation, and calculations to ensure that standard processes are followed. Highlight issues for discussion and resolution.
  • Drive improvements within and across teams to eliminate balance sheet reconciliation issues.
  • Drive improvements around production of CAA and tax reports.
  • Work with Revenue Accounts and the VAH business to ensure processes for reporting are strong and robust and that issues are identified and resolved in a timely manner.
  • Work with teams to ensure that issues in interfaces and data information layers are resolved quickly and efficiently.
  • Represent the team on cross function projects and initiatives identifying and communicating issues, concerns, and requirements to the appropriate touchpoints.
  • Speak up to challenge the conclusions of project teams where necessary and put forward solutions more suitable for ensuring the integrity of backend processes (includes discussions with senior managers and partners).
  • Develop understanding of accounting processes and systems to allow understanding of the impact of project proposals.
  • Build trusting relationships with team members always showing a positive and caring demeanor towards their concerns.
  • Highlight any system or procedural issue that may lead to recognition, reconciliation, or accounting process issues.
  • Assist in the preparation of the audit file and co-ordinate audit activities.
  • Other tasks or duties assigned by overall team manager as required to achieve the objectives of the area.

Alongside the above, we're looking for the following:
  • Excellent double entry bookkeeping skills and the ability to understand and discuss practical implementation of IFRS
  • Strong appreciation accounting and financial systems – preferably Oracle financials/TM1/Business Objects.
  • Ability to exercise independent professional judgement and problem-solving skills within an overall business context.
  • Ability to understand, simplify and improve weak processes and controls ensuring efficient implementation.
  • Ability to understand large complex data sets and advise the manager and team on key issues within the data.
  • Proven ability to understand the wider business context and appreciate the importance of understanding end to end process.
  • Proven capability to prioritize work, working under pressure and delivering to tight timelines.
  • Ability to build relationships, allocate work effectively and manage through performance feedback.
  • Positive and pragmatic approach to achieving results.
