What are the requirements for becoming an airline pilot?
To become an airline pilot with Virgin Atlantic, we look for individuals who embody our values of collaboration, professionalism, and mutual respect. In addition to the right mindset and passion, we also require specific experience in terms of technical qualifications, flying hours and licences. You can find full details of these requirements below.
As an Airbus pilot you’ll be a critical member of our flight crew, working closely with some of the industry’s best to deliver our promise of safe and enjoyable flights around the globe. To be suitable to join us on the Airbus, you must be currently flying or have flown one of the following aircraft types:
Airbus A320/A330/A350/A380
You’ll need a minimum experience of 1,500 hours (FO) or 3000 (SFO) hours of total flying time on the above types. This must include at least 500 hours on one of the above type (hours spent solely as a cruise pilot are not included).
Before starting with us, you also need the following:
- Hold a current UK Class One Medical
- Have a valid United Kingdom Flight Crew License (ATPL) issued by the UK CAA.
- Be in possession of a valid type rating on your UK license, on one of the aircraft types highlighted above.
- The ability to demonstrate a high level of proficiency in English (certified as ICAO level 6 English Proficiency when applying
We are looking for Boeing pilots to join us as First Officers and Senior First Officers from all four corners of the industry, from Short Haul commanders to Long Haul pilots. To be suitable, you must have operated in the last 3 years on one of the following:
- Boeing 737/747/757/767/777/787
You’ll need a minimum experience of 1500 hours (FO) and 3000 hours (SFO) of total flying time on the above. This must include at least 500 hours current on type (hours spent solely as a cruise pilot are not included).
You also need the following:
- Hold a current UK Class One Medical
- Have a valid United Kingdom Flight Crew License (ATPL) issued by the UK CAA
- Be in possession of a valid type rating on your UK license, on one of the aircraft types highlighted above
- The ability to demonstrate a high level of proficiency in English (certified as ICAO level 6 English Proficiency when applying)
Once you have signed your formal contract and new starter forms, your onboarding journey and pre-employment checks can begin. Although they may take some time, these checks are essential—safety and security are the top priorities at Virgin Atlantic and form the foundation of everything we do. That’s why thorough background and compliance checks are a vital part of our pilot recruitment process.
Here are some of the main things required:
- Full details of your five-year background history, inclusive of employment periods, educational periods and any gaps outside of these
- Once you’ve submitted your employment history and referee details, we’ll begin reaching out to your references right away
- You’ll need to apply for a Criminal Records Check (CRC), also known as a Disclosure Baring Service certificate (DBS), and where applicable, an overseas CRC if you have lived abroad for a continuous six months or more, in the last five years
- You’ll be invited to book an appointment at our head office, The VHQ, to complete a mandatory drug and alcohol screening as part of our onboarding process.
- As part of our onboarding process, you’ll receive documents to help you obtain your uniform, airside ID, and any required vaccinations
